LIke Shelly Simonds, Elaine Goodman Luria stepped in when another candidate had to drop out. Simonds was the “coin flip” loser in the Virginia House of Delegates. Luria is starting earlier in the election process and should not need a coin flip.
Elaine Goodman Luria https://elaineforcongress.com/2017/12/31/elaine-luria-for-congress/is running for Virginia’s second Congressional District. She has Dave Belote’s blessing. He was the front runner for the Democratic nomination, but dropped out for family reasons. Now she is the front runner.

What Luria means:
Security is
- a strong and ready military,
- reliable and affordable health care,
- well protected Social Security and and Medicare,
- a well protected environment,
- stable housing for families, and secure neighborhoods.
Equality is
- equitable treatment regardless of sex, gender identity, race, religion, or sexual orientation,
- equal pay for equal work particularly noting issues for people of color and for women,
- high quality public education for all,
- equal access to voting, and
- women’s autonomy regarding access to health care.
Prosperity is
- infrastructure investments
- access to jobs that pay a living wage and provide benefits
- world class education available for all
- access to health care without fear that a single bad health event will cause financial failure
- preserve the planet for future generations
- protect our democracy from enemies foreign and domestic, safeguard free and fair elections
We can appreciate Luria’s twenty-first century goals.
We can appreciate what Luria brings to this campaign. VA 02 is navy territory. Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Hampton are navy towns. Born in Birmingham, Alabama and a graduate of the Indian Springs Prep School, Luria entered the Naval Academy at seventeen. She graduated with a degree in physics and history. Years later, she added a Master’s Degree in engineering management from OId Dominion.
Luria served for 20 years as a Surface Warfare Officer and nuclear engineer. She participated in and conducted operations in the Middle East and Western Pacific on destroyers, cruisers, and aircraft carriers. She enforced sanctions – boarding Iraqi oil smugglers in the Arabian Gulf. She launched jets off the deck of an aircraft carrier in the Indian Ocean – striking Iraq and Afghanistan. She was in charge of nuclear reactors, was second in command of a guided missile cruiser, was in command of a combat-ready unit of 400 sailors to provide assault craft in support of the U.S. Marine Corps. She had a military career to be proud of.
In retirement, settled in Norfolk with her husband, retired Commander Robert Blondin, they started The Mermaid Factory — a place for locals and tourists to paint the City of Norfolk icon. This may be a great retirement business, but Luria is not retiring.

This is not one of the most flippable Republican seats. Daily Kos ranks it 61st most likely to be flipped. Mark Moulitsas, founder of Daily Kos, argues Democrats have a chance to flip 60 Republican seats. Provide Elaine Luria with some resources so Moulitsas’ prediction plus one can be accurate.
On March 13 in Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District, there is an opportunity to flip another formerly Republican held seat. Trump carried this one by twenty points.
