Jennifer Boysko grew up in Alabama. She went to college in Virginia -- Hollins University. Still a women's school. With a reputation for gentility. And for literacy, for writing. For personal attention. Fewer than eight hundred undergraduates.Her first political job was for an Alabaman. She was an aide to Senator Richard Shelby - when he was a Democrat. She became a policy maven. Federal policy and local policy. She worked for a township supervisor in Virginia. She did particular work with homeowners groups. Governor McAuliffe appointed her as a Citizen Member of the state Real Estate Board. After training from Emerge, she ran for HD 86 for a second time in 2015. The incumbent retired. Maybe he knew she was coming back. Other Democrats knew. No one opposed her in the primary. She won the general election 54 -- 42 despite being outspent. She is now running for the State Senate from a position of strength.

Political Note #164 Leslie Cockburn VA CD 05

Leslie Cockburn is a journalist and a film maker. She has been attacked for a 1991 book "Dangerous Liaison: The Inside Story of the US-Israeli Covert Relationship." Her critics say the Cockburns always see Israel as a menace. Her opponent has been attacked for agreeing to join the Tea Party caucus in Congress if elected in order to get the nomination. He denies that there was any such a deal.

Abigail Spanberger investigated money laundering and narcotics distribution for the US Postal Inspection Service. Her constituents have been intrigued by her subsequent work with the CIA. She was an operations officer. She collected intelligence while living overseas. She recruited and managed assets. She was an American spy.

Political Note #138 Jennifer Wexton VA CD 10

Jennifer Wexton is a graduate of the University of Maryland and the William and Mary Law School. She began her legal work in 2001 as an assistant prosecutor in Loudon County. The next year, she was assigned to lead the prosecution in a case that attracted attention. Twenty year old college student Clara Schwartz was accused and, as a consequence of Jennifer Wexton's prosecution, convicted of first degree murder and conspiracy in orchestrating her father's murder. Wexton did her job and got the conviction. She also became electable.

Political Note #97 Elaine Luria VA CD 02

Elaine lLuria served for 20 years as a Surface Warfare Officer and nuclear engineer. She participated in and conducted operations in the Middle East and Western Pacific on destroyers, cruisers, and aircraft carriers. She enforced sanctions - boarding Iraqi oil smugglers in the Arabian Gulf. She launched jets off the deck of an aircraft carrier in the Indian Ocean - striking Iraq and Afghanistan. She was in charge of nuclear reactors, was second in command of a guided missile cruiser, was in command of a combat-ready unit of 400 sailors to provide assault craft in support of the U.S. Marine Corps Luria stepped in as the Democratic candidate in when another candidate had to drop out for personal reasons. She has that candidate's full support.

Political Note #76 Tim Kaine VA US Senate

Tim Kaine is an incumbent Virginia US Senator. His running for reelection is sad because he is not the Vice President. In the 2016 campaign, we learned a lot about him. Midwestern nice (born in Minnesota, Bachelor’s Degree from Mizzou, he came to Virginia by way of Harvard Law School and a Jesuit mission to Honduras. He joined a Richmond law firm, taught at the University of Richmond, represented clients subject to housing discrimination. He had developed an interest in politics through his wife's family. His father-in-law was a former Republican governor of Virginia. Elected to the Richmond city council for his first term by a 97 vote majority; the council elected Tim Kaine mayor in his third term. Tim Kaine had real successes as mayor. While serving as mayor, Tim Kaine ran for Lt. Governor. With a one-term limitation on Virginia governors, Tim Kaine, like many Virginia Lt. Governors, ran for Governor four years after being elected. After he completed his one term limit, he ran for US Senator successfully.

Mike Mullin is a law and order liberal -- a politically effective position. He is running against the candidate he beat in the special election to win this seat. He continues to serve as a Commonwealth's Attorney for the City of Suffolk. He stresses his commitment to opposing gang violence and has been certified by the Virginia Gang Investigator's Association as a Gang Investigator.
