2018 Primary Lost 51 — 49

Ralph Waldo Emerson: A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines.

The purpose of these Notes is to help reelect endangered Democrats and to help elect Democrats challenging endangered Republican seats — in Congress, in the Senate, in state houses, and in state legislatures.  I prefer to support Democratic candidates who have no primary opposition.  Where there is primary opposition among Democrats, a Note is warranted when it appears clear who the Democratic nominee will be.

Here is an inconsistency.  An incumbent Democrat In a safe Democratic district who does not vote like a Democrat may be treated differently.   A viable challenger may get some support.  Marie Newman fits that description.  So does the district.  The only Republican candidate in the district is so far out of the mainstream he denies that the holocaust occurred.

Marie Newman https://www.marienewmanforcongress.com/ explains her run for Congress.   She deplores incumbent Democrat Dan Lipinski’s far-right record on some important issues.  He voted to defund women’s healthcare and family planning. He sponsored “right to discriminate” legislation. He voted against the Affordable Care Act. He opposed a $15 minimum wage.

Lipinski is no pushover. He has been elected to Congress seven times. He works closely with local politicians, has the support of 30 mayors and village presidents as well as the Illinois AFL-CIO.  He sees himself as working for the working class and the communities of his district.

Because of Lipinski’s opposition to abortion and gay rights, Chicago Democrats like Representatives Luis Gutierrez and Jan Schakowsky support Marie Newman Representative Robin Kelly, of the neighboring second district, has announced neutrality.

Marie Newman is endorsed by progressive groups: NARAL Pro-Choice America, The Human Rights Campaign, MoveOn and their local equivalents.  She has labor union support — from teachers, state employees, nurses, and health care workers.

Marie Newmanis a strong candidate.  A marketer, she became a partner at age 31 in a national ad agency.  When one of her children was bullied in school, she dealt with the personal issue, but also founded a national nonprofit – Team Up to Stop Bullying.  She has been a national advocate for cancer research and gun safety.

As a Member of Congress, Marie Newmanwould support issues important to Lipinski’s constituents.

  • Universal health care, including women’s health care and choice
  • Higher wages, paid family leave, less expensive child care, and lower taxes for for those with modest incomes.
  • A tax system wiithout loopholes for corporations but with support for small businesses
  • Support for education
  • A society without discrimination based on race, religion, gender or sexuality
  • Support for immigrants

We should not oppose a Democratic incumbent lightly.  We should appreciate Lipinski’s support for unions and for resources for the district’s communities.  The erosion of union membership and power has been a goal for Republicans and those who have made the Republican Party what it has become.  That erosion is a large part of the decline of the middle class.

Marie Newman https://www.marienewmanforcongress.com/supports unions.  She supports women, minorities, and a fairer America.  The primary in Illinois is on March 20.  If you are going to support her, you should do that now.  She would be a more comprehensive Democrat in a safe Democratic district.
