Trump has failed in Europe and he has failed the world.
The danger to himself produced by his negotiations with Ukraine are legal. He has been impeached for his effort to extort an agreement from the President of Ukraine to announce an investigation of Hunter Biden and his father and Trump’s probable rival in the 2020 election, Joe Biden and for his refusal to cooperate with the House of Representatives Impeachment investigation of Trump’s effort.
Another Eurocentric failure was his effort to force NATO member countries to increase military spending. It should have been easy. NATO countries had already committed themselves to raising their spending to 2% of their GDP. Quiet diplomacy to make sure that got done would have worked. Bullying NATO countries for not doing their share to support NATO got Trump two things. Germany increased its direct spending on NATO by the relative pittance required to equal United States’ spending. NATO leadership mocking Trump at cocktail parties.
Like soccer and basketball, let’s treat Israel as if it is part of Europe. Trump made a friend of Israel. Of course, Israel was already a friend of the United States. Trump succeeded in dividing American Jews so that some American Jews supported the Israeli government and some did not. Some success.
Finally, the world. Trump withdrew from the Paris Climate Accords. What he expected to get from opposing the climate accords is hard to see. Warm water ports for Russia and Canada and Alaska? Maybe he’ll get that In exchange for being remembered as the man most responsible for the coming climate disaster. This will not end well for Trump or for the world.
