January 15th , 2025 Len’s Political Note #699   Electing Officers of the DNC

 2025                                       Party Election

On February 1, the Democratic National Committee is scheduled to elect a new Chair.  The Committee will also elect a Treasurer, a Secretary, three general Vice Chairs and a Vice Chair for Engagement and Civic Engagement.  I ask, as I asked about the Chair position, has anyone asked your opinion?  If someone asked, would you have an opinion?  Who elects the DNC officials anyhow?  What does the DNC do? And what do its officials do?

The DNC is the official governing body of the Democratic Part.  Officially, it organizes the national convention, drafts the platform, coordinates campaign strategies at the national, state, and local level.  It does polling and research and fundraising.  Officially, it oversees the state Democratic committees and other committees like the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee (DSCC).

Unofficially, every candidate for every local, state, and federal position runs his or her own campaign to reflect his or her beliefs.  For some, the money the DNC and the DSCC and the DCCC can provide are crucial.  In some respects, those funds are crucial for credibility as well as for the money itself.  As a result, being the Chair of the DNC is a little like herding animals that do not take to being in a herd – like cats.

There are hopeful suggestions.  Simon Rosenberg of the Hopium Chronicles wants the DNC to become the “central communications hub of the new opposition”. He imagines the DNC producing watchable and effective YouTube content that dominates and organizes the period between elections and helps us with our communications about the policies we oppose.  Deepak Puri of the Democracy Labs wants Democrats to revitalize by using the tactics of Saul Alinsky – noting that the Republicans use too many of those tactics against us.

If you want to have an impact on the selection of the DNC officials, you would want to be in touch with members of the DNC.  There are 448 of them.  That includes the chair and vice chair of each state Democratic Party as well as the Democratic Party in US territories. Additional representatives are apportioned by population.  House and Senate leaders are included.  So are some governors. mayors, state legislative leaders, and so on – usually as identified by the national organization of those Democratic officials.

The DNC leadership includes the Chair, the Vice Chairs, a secretary, a treasurer, and a national finance chair.  This Leadership is influential, but the entire membership participates in the election.

So…. If you have an opinion, let the Leadership know who you prefer.  You might also let the Chairs and Vice Chairs of the state parties know – particularly those from the state where you live in and other states you have a connection with.  Try it.  It would be novel for them to receive opinions from the public.

Len’s thoughts on the matter.

The list of state chairs and First Vice Chairs below that was in the post about candidates for the DNC Chair is below.  That list has contact information. These and the Leadership are some of the voters.  They are the people you will want to contact.  You can take a look at a recent American Prospect Article https://prospect.org/politics/2025-01-10-opening-dncs-black-box/   That identifies all of the DNC members and takes a peek inside of what it calls the “black box” of the DNC.  The article does not provide, because the DNC does not provide, contact information for the 448.

There has been virtually no angst in the contest for Chair and other offices of the DNC. DNC figures appear to accept that the 2024 loss is a failure of communication.  My inclination is to support candidates for Vice Chairs and for other offices who will support improving Democratic communication.  Some of that communication improvement has to do with technology.

My own view is concern about confidence in our positions. In 2024, we faced a candidate who is confident in himself only when surrounded by “yes men” and a party whose core issue, fear of immigrants, reflects a lack of confidence in American culture. The Democratic campaign was dominated by a fear of what the opposing leader and party would do if elected. I would combine the confidence issue with an acknowledgment (at least a personal acknowledgment) that the accusation of elitism has a basis.  I can recall consistently saying (mostly to myself) in response to complaints about inflation, that the inflation index demonstrates that inflation is going down and, then finally, inflation is very law.  But that response was never satisfactory to people severely affected by the high price of groceries, a high price that has still not gone down.

We need a DNC Chair and DNC Leadership that is confident in the Democratic Party and in America:  Confidence in Democratic support for abortion.  Confidence in Democratic support for the LGBTQ community and understanding about the popular discomfort with people changing genders.  Confidence in Democratic support for unions.  Confidence in the Democratic success in addressing inflation and realistic about the popular conception about inflation.  Confidence in the Democratic fix of the economy while understanding that better economies sometimes create a desire for more and can be a context for revolution.  Confidence in the Democratic fix in addressing immigration while arguing that the success of immigrants is part of the goal of rising tides lifting all boats.

There was room for criticism of Joe Biden’s presidency in 2024.  I don’t mean his elderly gait or his inability to remember names.  I am older than Joe Biden.  My gait is fine, but I have trouble remembering names.  We know that throughout his presidency Joe Biden could think and act with authority.  He was, however, extremely late in addressing the number and the ways people were crossing our southern border.  He had a fix and he finally exercised it through an executive order.  Illegal border crossings are now well below what they were during Trump’s pre-pandemic presidency.

It is too late to argue about the campaign. We have to face what we have to face.  Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries and their colleagues will do a good job of preventing the worst and the cruelest of the Republican proposals from becoming law.  The DNC needs to elect a Chair and other officers who will make the Democratic Party the voice for the majority of Americans – rich and poor, black and white and brown.

In Len’s Political Notes and Letters, I have mostly choosing among Democrats.  The purpose of these Notes has been to help people choose which Democrats to spend time and money on in contests against Republicans.

In this case, I feel an obligation to mention who I support in the DNC contests. I have mentioned already that I prefer Ben Wikler for DNC chair for his comfort with contemporary communications.  As for the other DNC positions, I am comfortable with the incumbents.  With regard to the Vice Chairs, I like Chris Jones of Arkansas’s interest in modernizing the party’s technology.  I like Michelle Deatrick’s commitment to dealing with the climate crisis, (By the way, do not believe for a minute that Donald Trump thinks that climate change is non-existent.  His interest in Canada and Greenland is a product of his recognition of climate change and his belief that it represents a business opportunity in a warmer north). As for the third general Vice Chair, go ahead and choose for yourself.

My goal in writing about the DNC is to encourage you to get involved in the selection process whichever Democratic candidate(s) for office you support. Make yourself heard.  Call and leave a message.  Send an email.  Communicate however you can. Contact the DNC voters.  They do not expect to hear from the grass roots.  Be a grass root with clout.

Good luck.  Go to it. Let people know what your think.  If you have been writing postcards, write some more postcards.  If you like email, write a few.  If you don’t mind leaving a message with an answering machine or a staffer, do a few of those.  Enjoy yourself.
