In 2017 and 2018 special elections were harbingers of the November, 2018 Blue Wave. 2019 doesn’t look as good. The year began badly with state legislative seats flipping to Republicans in Minnesota and Connecticut. April got better with a Pennsylvania state legislative seat flipping from Republican to Democrat. May did not fulfill April’s promise. Although a Democrat exceeded the Presidential vote for a state legislative seat in early May in Wisconsin, late May was not encouraging. The Democratic candidate for Congress in PA 12, an open, but overwhelmingly Republican district lost overwhelmingly – by 50 points. Two state Senate seats were only slightly better. A Pennsylvania Democrat’s 57 – 43 loss in a state House race was 14 points better than Hillary Clinton in that district in 2016. No trends here; little in the way of gains.
