Slightly more egregiously than Democrats, Republican Presidents appoint new justices in their late forties or early fifties. Appointments are intended to influence the country for forty or fifty years.
It’s not right. A Supreme Court justice should not have such a long term. Creating term limits, however, would require a constitutional amendment.
Setting a minimum age for appointment could be done by statute. Appointment to the Supreme Court should not be a mid-career move. It should be the culmination of a distinguished legal career.
Appointment at age 63 is likely to yield a career in the Court of twenty years or so. That is long enough.
