As Venezuelans head for Colombia and Ecuador and Peru, refugees from the northern part of Central American head for the US by way of Mexico.

Why the US? It is the land of law and order. They are seeking safety. Even if the US camps are horrific, they are safer than at home. Why not Mexico? It is not as safe as the US. Mexico has been coping with drug gangs for decades. Perhaps, though, Mexico is safe enough. The US government, combining financial threats with financial support can make Mexico enough of a save haven so that most of those from the three northern countries of Central American will stay in Mexico.

Mexico is big – almost 130 million people. It can absorb refugees. How many refugees are there from those three countries anyhow? The total population of the three countries is less than 25 million people. World data suggests 30,000 from Guatemala, 30,000 from El Salvador, 20,000 from Honduras. Call it 100,000. Double that number or more as the US cancels its support for these Central American Countries.  Mexico can absorb those numbers.

Why should the US take any refugees from Central America? They can all go to Mexico. We know what kind of country we are. A country we used to describe as built by immigrants.
