Gil Cisneros went to work for Frito Lay after he left the Navy — in operational resources. He was a shipping and manufacturing supervisor. He was a Republican when he started. He had been a Democrat for two years before he was laid off in 2010. Did Obama make him a Democrat?
Gil Cisneros won the lottery – in 2010. $266 million. Weeks after he was laid off. Providence.
Gil Cisneros and his wife became philanthropists. They endowed scholarships for Latino students at George Washington University and at the University of Southern California. They started a movement to ensure that every Latino family has at least one college graduate. They created a Foundation to provide mentorships. He was a Democrat and a philanthropist.
Gil Cisneros wanted to learn more about education. Providence. He spent a year there. He got a Master’s in Urban Educational Policy from Brown University in 2015. He had become a Democrat and an activist and was about to become a candidate.
Gil Cisneros started his run for Congress in 2017. He targeted incumbent Republican Ed Royce for his votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Royce announced his retirement. Cisneros and Andy Thornburn, with the assistance of the California Democratic Party and the DCCC declared a truce. No negative campaigning against each other as they hoped to prevent two Republicans from excluding Democrats from the top of the non-partisan primary. Cisneros came in second to the Republican, then won the run off. He became a Congressman.
What kind of Congressmen has Gil Cisneros become? The kind who joins both the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the moderate New Democrat Coalition. That is where he belongs on the Democrats’ political spectrum. He joined the thirty-eight member Hispanic Caucus and the thirty-one member Asian Pacific American Caucus. He is a practical Member of Congress.
During his campaign, Gil Cisneros discussed the importance of the Democrats having new leadership in Congress. He said the same thing after he was elected. He also praised Nancy Pelosi’s strengths. When the Democrats nominated a speaker, he made no announcements, but he appeared to have voted for her. When they had the vote for Speaker in January, he voted for Nancy Pelosi as Speaker. He is a practical Member of Congress.
He’s learning about the opportunities he has and the limits on his power – even with a Democratic majority, even when he did not oppose the elected Speaker.

Gil Cisneros https://cisnerosforcongress.com/ was elected by a majority of 6,711 votes. That is not one of the very closest races, but it is still very close. He has had his life transformed and has transformed it himself. He left the Navy and became a civilian. He left the Republican party and became a Democrat. He left his civilian job involuntarily. Having won the lottery, he became a philanthropist, an educator, and activist, and a politician. He become a Member of Congress. Let’s keep him there. He has discovered a calling – helping other people. While he is doing that, help him out.
