2017       General Election      Elected 59 – 41

David Reid, businessman and naval reserve veteran, is running for (according to one blog) the fourth most likely Virginia House of Delegate seat to be flipped from Republican to Democrat in the 2017 election.  He is a good candidate to support now because early support is particularly valuable and because he is the only Democratic candidate for HD 32, which means there is no primary here.  Reid lives in Ashburn — a 40 minute commuter train ride to Washington DC, but well over an  hour commuter drive. Virginia has two Democratic Senators and a Democratic Governor.  Unusually, Virginia has a one term limit for governors, so we can’t be certain that a Democrat will be elected again. Also, unusually, Virginia elections are in odd numbered years and the state senate will not face elections until 2019. The state legislature is not Democratic.  Republicans control the state senate 21-19.  To gain control of the House of Delegates, Democrats need to flip seventeen seats.  As it happens, there are seventeen Republican controlled House of Delegate seats that Hillary Clinton won against Donald Trump.  HD 32 is not only one of those, but a district that Hillary carried by 20 points.

David Reid is a great candidate for HD 32.  Once upon a time, politicians in the United States spoke about growing up in a log cabin.  Reid recalls growing up, with his divorced father and his siblings, in a cinder block house without running water, spending six years in an orphanage, and spending time in a foster family.  He describes learning the value of work while in the orphanage — helping to maintain the 40-acre campus while being paid 35 cents per hour.  He also appreciates the government and other assistance he received.  He attributes his being the first person in his family to graduate from college to Pell Grants, Guaranteed Student Loans, College Work Study, and academic scholarships.   He has lived with his wife for many years in Virginia. His two daughters are now in college.

Reid’s naval experience and his business experience are his preparation for politics.  He was a naval Intelligence Officer until he retired as a Commander in 2011.  In the navy, he was deployed to South Korea and to Iceland, served in a field deployment with the US Army, and participated in a NATO exercise on board the USS Mount Whitney.  In business, drawing on his navy experience, he worked in strategic management, banking, global telecommunications, and the defense industry.  In 2014, he founded his own consulting business,

As a candidate, Reid combines a focus on local issues and broad issues.  He proposes to work with fellow members of the Loudoun County delegation to reduce the burden of tolls on the Greenway, He also plans to support Planned Parenthood, LGBT equality, and what he describes as commonsense measures to reduce preventable gun violence.  He claims the capacity to be bipartisan, the experience to analyze the complex problems facing Virginia, and the skills to promote innovation in transportation, education, college affordability, and public safety.
