Kelly Convirs-Fowler's story begins in the Philippines. Both her grandfathers were Filipinos. Both served in the U.S. Navy. Both became US citizens by virtue of their service. Both were buried with honors as veterans, one of them in Arlington. She was a Virginia Beach public school third grade teacher for five years and now heads a group of real estate agents who specialize in military relocation. Her campaign for office germinated with her role leading a counter demonstration against a post 2016 election a March 4Trump rally.

Political Note #35 Ralph Northam VA Governor

For a long time, Ralph Northam was not a Democrat. Son of a nurse and a Virginia judge, he was the kind of kid who is going places. A high school basketball player, the salutatorian of his graduating class, he was voted "most likely to succeed." For college, he went to VMI (the Virginia Military Institute). After college, he went to a local medical school and then joined the military, serving as an army physician from 1984 to 1992, getting further training as a pediatric neurologist. He voted for GW Bush in 2000 and 2004, ran for the Virginia State Senate as a Democrat in 2007, beating a Republican incumbent. He ran for Lt. Governor as a Democrat in 2013 (candidates for Governor and Lt. Governor run separately in Virginia) and won by 10 percentage points.

Political Note #32 Doug Jones AL US Senate

Doug Jones is a distinguished attorney in Birmingham. His practice includes white collar criminal litigation and civil litigation. Since 2004 he has served as the appointed master for the environmental clean up of PCB’s in the Anniston, Alabama area. Five months after taking office as US Attorney under President Bill Clinton, Doug Jones received national attention when a bomb exploded at a Birmingham women’s health clinic, killing a police officer and maiming a nurse. While he was US Attorney, he coordinated the task force (the FBI, local police, and other law enforcement) that eventually led to Eric Rudolf being captured and pleading guilty... . Jone has prosecuted murderers who opposed the Civil Rights movement and murderers who opposed the women's rights movement.

Rodman is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Director of Women's Studies at Randolph-Macon College. She is a former Fulbright Scholar and serves an expert witness in U.S. Federal Immigration courts assisting migrants seeking political asylum. She describes herself as committed to diversity and inclusion, economic development, reproductive rights, and affordable healthcare. She is also a member of the North Carolina-based Lumbee tribe of Native Americans.

Cheryl Turpin ran in the special election for this open seat and lost to a deputy sheriff by six points or a little more than 300 votes. She is trying again against the same opponent in the regular election of 2017. is a local high school science teacher. She received a BS from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MEd from the University of Virginia. For the past 8 years, she has taught Advanced Placement Environmental Science. She also spent much of her career working with at-risk students, serving as a partner in an organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college.

He is a partner in a small, craft brewery -- Tradition Brewing Company. He attributes his interest in public service to his father who, as a civil engineer at Langley Air Force Base, was responsible for dealing with crises like oil spills. Zack Wittkamp sees himself as a problem solver rather than as a partisan. He withdrew from the race for personal reasons.

Lee Carter is another Virginia candidate for the House of Delegates with deep roots in the military -- a former marine who is proud of the fact that members of his family have served in all five branches of the US military. He is an IT specialist who lives in the City of Manassas. He moved to Virginia in 2011, after completing five years of service in the United States Marine Corps. He got his technical training through the Marine Corps Communications-Electronics School. He describes himself as having been involved in issues of economic justice in Northern Virginia, including, as part of his commitment to affordable housing, a fight to help residents of a mobile home park to stay in their homes.

Political Note #20 Christine Pellegrino NY AD 09

Christine Pellegrino is a reading teacher. She was a Bernie Sanders delegate to the national convention and has been an activist on behalf of those who did not want to take the state school assessment tests. She is a proponent of women's rights, the $15 per hour minimum wage, campaign finance reform, and protecting the environment. A victory in this traditionally Republican Assembly district would be a sign that Democrats can win the State Senate in 2018.

Willie Randall is an African American running in the Virginia Eastern Shore in a district that is 60% white. He is veteran running in a district that is dominated by the military. He distinguished himself in the military -- earning the rank of Major and a Bronze Star during the Persian Gulf war. Retired now, Willie Randall is a civic leader was a member and twice President of the Northampton Board of Supervisors was the crucial figure in bringing universal preschool to Northampton County.
