030822           Political Note #451 Kim Schrier WA 08

2022               General Election

The advertisement called her Dr. Tax. It showed her holding fistfuls for $20 dollar bills.  The advertisement looked antisemitic to many and it may have helped her get elected in 2018.

In 2013, Parents Magazine identified Kim Schrier https://www.drkimschrier.com as Seattle’s best pediatrician.  In 2016, she found Donald Trump’s election disturbing.  Granddaughter of German Jews who left Germany before the Nazis took control, in 2017 she was disturbed by Nazi symbols at the Charlottesville Unite the Right Rally and by Donald Trump’s reaction to the Rally.  Early in 2017, she was disturbed at her Congressman, David Reichert’s support for repealing the Affordable Car Act.  He promised repeal and replace. After he announced he would not run again, after he had voted for repeal of the ACA in previous years, as a kind of valedictory, he voted against repeal of the ACA and against the entirely inadequate Republican alternative,

By the time he voted against repeal, he had created a Democratic challenger for his district.  A graduate of the University of California Berkeley, Kim Schrier spent some time working for the EPA in Washington while weighing whether she wanted to be a doctor or a scientist.  Recalling her childhood treatment for diabetes, she chose the University of California’s Davis campus medical school.  Her next stop was Stanford for a residency. She began her medical practice at the Virginia Mason Medical Center in Issaquah, Washington.  That could have been where she stayed for life.  Practicing medicine in the same town where David Reichert had an office.

Kim Schrier is now an established member of Congress.  She is looking a changed district. Her district used to be shaped like an old shoe. The emply space has been filled. The district has been squared up with additional rural voters.  The character of the district hasn’t changed.  Washington 08 had been a pure toss-up with no advantage to either Republicans or Democrats before redistricting. That remains the same after redistricting.  WA 08 is still a pure toss-up.

When Kim Schrier ran, she campaigned on keeping the Affordable Care act.  Now she is defending the roads and bridges infrastructure law passed by congress and the climate change and family support bill that was not?  She is proud of the infrastructure law and points to a $600 project to widen Washington Route 18 in a section people agree is dangerous.

Are the people in her district angry because the infrastructure law and the proposals for climate change and family support are too expensive?  Kim Schrier doesn’t think so.  She explains that taxes on the wealthy are already built into the plan for the climate and family support bill.  Furthermore, she says the investment is worth it.

Kim Schrier speaks in support of the child tax credit because it would continue transformational changes in the lives of families.  She argues for a legislation to slow climate change while also funding the fight against wildfires — not a small matter in the state of Washington.  We know that nationally and almost certainly in WA 08, the giant BBB bill was unpopular while its segments were valued.  As Kim Schrier supports pieces separately, she’ll be speaking to her constituents.

Kim Schrier has a different kind of problem. Her husband made a substantial purchase of stock in Apple which was not disclosed to Congress and, therefore, the public, in a timely way.  Although she says she was unaware of the purchase,  she might better describe this as a rookie mistake (Call it near-rookie. The error was not during her first term.).

No one is blaming Kim Schrier for Covid and her constituents appear to  appreciate her response to it.  She has introduced a bill to streamline hospitals’ ability to hire staff.  She is helping small farmers get grants to minimize the impact of the supply chain problem.  She has proposed a bill to suspend the federal gas tax to moderate the price of gasoline – a proposal that may be even more important during Russia-Ukraine War uncertainty about fuel costs.

As Kim Schrier prepares for November, she does not know who her opponent will be.  One possible opponent insists he is the only pro-life candidate in the race.  Another appears to think he deserves the seat because his mother once represented WA 08.  The third is ex-military. She has to make her case to a somewhat revised district.

We know that Joe Biden carried the components of the new district by 2% which, like the old one, is both east and west of the Cascade Mountains. Kim Schrier is prepared.  She started 2022 with $4 Million to spend.  None of the three Republican candidates can come close to that number.  Whoever is the nominee will be able to raise a lot of money, but will have a hill to climb to catch up.  Help Kim Schrier https://www.drkimschrier.com make that hill steeper.  Donate.
