2018 General Election Elected 51 — 49

Defeating Republicans runs in the family

In 2016, Las Cruces City Councilor Nathan Small defeated long term City Councilor and Republican Andy Nunez to gain a seat in the New Mexico House of Representatives.  A rancher and conservationist, Small might have been an ideal candidate to run for Congress.

Not in 2018.  Xochitl Torres Small  https://www.xochforcongress.com/ , a Las Cruces attorney for Kemp, Smith an El Paso Texas-based law firm, a former clerk for a federal judge, and Nathan Small’s wife is the ideal candidate to run for Congress.  This is the year for Democratic women to run for Congress.

Xochitl Torres Small‘s mother is a school teacher.  Her father is a social worker. Her grandparents immigrated from Mexico.  She went away to college — to Georgetown.  She came home for law school — the University of New Mexico.  She stayed home for her clerkship, for her legal work, and for her family.

Pundits describe this district as Lean Republican.  There are, nevertheless, several reasons for Xochitl Torres Smallto succeed.  NM CD 02 is the most Latino congressional district in this heavily Latino state.  The district has more Democrats than Republicans.  Turnout has been a problem in the past.  Not in this year’s primaries. Democratic turnout increased by nearly 50%. And the polls are encouraging.  A poll for the DCCC showed Xochitl Torres Smal trailing by 2 points.Xochitl Torres Small has a fistful of endorsements — Emily’s List, End Citizens United, NARAL, Feminist Majority, Sierra Club, Equality New Mexico.  She is a progressive Democrat.

Xochitl Torres Small has something to do with those positive polls and has a decent chance to win.  The Cook Report found her gun ownership, her interest in hunting oryx, her claim that she postponed her honeymoon to go hunting, and her willingness to butcher game and  chickens set her apart from urban Democrats.

Xochitl Torres Small has identified protecting the Affordable Care Act as her first priority.  She would be pleased to move toward a form of universal health care.  She has concerns about how immigrants and immigration has been treated.  She would accommodate those who would like to come to the US for temporary work intending to return to their home country.  She would particularly support family reunification — noting that people who are supported by their family are more likely to be successful.

Xochitl Torres Small is another candidate the DCCC was pleased to support.  DCCC likes candidates who raise money.  Xochitl Torres Small does that.  She has been outraising her Republican opponent for this open, but traditionally Republican seat.  The DCCC has added Xochitl Torres Smallto its Red to Blue List.  After Law School Xochitl Torres Smallworked on Senator Tom Udall’s 2008 campaign.  After his victory, she created his Southern New Mexico office.  She left the political job for a clerkship with Federal Judge Robert C. Brack–  what ambitious and successful law school graduates usually do right after graduation.

Xochitl Torres Small‘s law practice focused on environmental law, especially water and other natural resources.  If elected to Congress, she could form a water resources caucus with water resources expert Kathleen Williams of Montana who was the subject of the previous note.

Help create that caucus.  Provide some support for Xochitl Torres Small.  She is showing signs of being a winner.  This is a district that has rarely elected Democrats.  It can be Democratic in 2018 because it has a candidate capable of keeping of raising money and connecting with the people in the district.  Provide some support to Xochitl Torres Small https://www.xochforcongress.com/.
