Robert Jackson ran for and was elected to City Council, but later lost campaigns for Borough President and twice for the State Senate. The 2016 State Senate loss was close. Three top candidates in the Democratic primary were within 1,000 votes of each other. Jackson is running again for Senate District 31 which covers the west side of Manhattan. He is running in the primary against an incumbent Democrat who is a member of the Independent Democratic Caucus, a group of eight state Senators who organized with the Republicans, allowing the Republicans to control the Senate.

Max Rose received an education from the military. He also received an education at elite institutions (Wesleyan, the London School of Economics, some time at Oxford). He came back to New York to work in health care. Running for Congress is an extension of his vision of public service. He demonstrates toughness and a commitment to address what people need on Staten Island and throughout the country.

Political Note #20 Christine Pellegrino NY AD 09

Christine Pellegrino is a reading teacher. She was a Bernie Sanders delegate to the national convention and has been an activist on behalf of those who did not want to take the state school assessment tests. She is a proponent of women's rights, the $15 per hour minimum wage, campaign finance reform, and protecting the environment. A victory in this traditionally Republican Assembly district would be a sign that Democrats can win the State Senate in 2018.

Political Note #18 Tom Suozzi NY CD 03

Tom Suozzi is the former mayor of Glen Cove, Long Island. As mayor, he earned Al Gore's praise for cleaning up industrial and commercial sites and redeveloping brownfield and superfund sites. When he took office as Nassau County Executive in 2001 as the first Democrat in that position in 30 years, he was faced by billions in debt and an annual deficit of $300 millio. He cut spending, eliminated the deficit; reduced borrowing and reduced the debt. He centralized access to social services, earned praise for his achievements, and was reelected.
