Tom Malinowski interned for New Jersey Senator Bill Bradley. He went west for university and earned a Rhodes Scholarship at the University of California, Berkeley. He worked for New York Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, then left to earn an M.Phil. from Oxford. He worked for the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna and then the Ford Foundation. He worked in the State Department writing speeches for Secretaries of State Warren Christopher and Madelaine Albright. Under Clinton he became Senior Director of the National Security Council managing international communications and writing foreign policy speeches for the President. With Democrats out of office, he became the head of the Washington office of Human Rights Watch. For over a decade, he was a leading opponent of the US use of torture, of tyranny in Myanmar, and of groups like the Taliban.

Political Note #190 Ben McAdams UT CD 04

Ben Mcadams was an amazing state Senator. He was able to get good ratings from organizations with opposing views. He received a 75% rating from Parents for Choice in Education. He received a 77% rating from the NEA. He was the highest scoring Democrat, with an 82% rating, from the Utah Taxpayers Association. As mayor of Salt Lake County, he was required by the legislature to create a new homeless shelter in the County, but not in Salt Lake City. This was a political problem for Ben McAdams. It may have been intended to be a political problem for Ben McAdams. The neighborhoods outside of Salt Lake City did not want a homeless shelter. Neither did the neighborhoods in the City. He decided he needed to know what it meant to be homeless, what it meant to be in a shelter. He might have asked experts. He might have arranged for a study. He decided to pretend he was homeless.

Political Note #165 Diane Mitsch Bush CO CD 03

Diane Mitsch Bush has, however, become a figure in Colorado. People in Colorado know her as an effective legislator. She was a County Commissioner from 2007 to 2012. She was a state representative from 2013 to 2017. As a state rep she won awards: Most effective freshman legislator, the Farmers Union's most effective legislator, the Livestock Association's most effective legislator, Conservation Colorado's Legislator of the year. Rural groups that don't necessarily agree with each other agree on her.

Political Note #149 Jason Crow CO CD 06

Jason Crow is a former Army Ranger and winner of the Bronze Star. He is a hunter and son of a blue collar family. He was an Obama supporter at the 2012 Democratic convention. He was moved to run for Congress by the 2016 election. Many who were so moved have focused on health care or on immigrants or the dangers of racism or the dangers of sexism. Crow was moved to run by and has focused on gun safety.

Political Note #107 Greg Stanton AZ CD 09

Greg Stanton is the Mayor of Phoenix. Greg Stanton is a Phi Beta Kappa Graduate from Marquette, a graduate of University of Michigan Law School. He worked in education law in Phoenix, was elected to the city council, and then was elected mayor. Greg Stanton was named a public official of the year in 2015. He distinguished himself by expanding light rail, bike lanes, and sidewalks. The city's greenhouse gas emissions were reduced.

Political Note #102 Hiral Tipernini AZ CD 08

came to Ohio from India as a three year old. Her parents struggled, then thrived. Her father was an engineer, her mother a social worker. Heral went to medical school. Hiral Tipirneni married to a fellow student. After completing residencies, they chose Phoenix as a place to settle. Her husband joined an orthopedics practice; she worked in ERs. Personal experiences changed Hiral Tipinerni's life. Her mother died of cancer. A nephew died of cancer. Hiral Tipirneni turned to cancer research. Work in cancer research moved her into the public life of the community. She was a leader of research teams, served on boards, was involved in public advocacy, worked to affect the character and quality of life in her community.

Political Note #94 Mikie Sherrill NJ CD 11

Mikie Sherrill A graduate of the Naval Academy, she flew helicopters in the Middle East and in Europe. Married to a fellow Annapolis graduate, they now have four children. A Russian desk officer for the Navy in London, she added a Master's Degree from the London School of Economics. A graduate of Georgetown Law School, she has served as a prosecutor in the US Attorney's Office in New Jersey. She has proved to be a strong candidate and has raised a lot of money.

Political Note #93 Jeff Van Drew NJ 02

Jeff Van Drew is the candidate that locals wanted. He is the candidate that the establishment wanted. He is a state Senator. Has been a state Senator since 2008, representing a district that covers South Jersey -- a pretty large piece of territory for an urban, eastern state. He won by 10 points the first time, 20 points the second time, and 30 points the third time. He may be the best liked dentist in the state.

Political Note #82 Ann Kirkpatrick AZ 02

Ann Kirkpatrick wants to return to Congress. She's a professional politician who has won some and lost some. She was elected to Congress for AZ 01 in 2006, 2008, 2012, and 2014. She lost to a Republican in 2010. Rather than face her again, the Republican ran and won in AZ 04 in 2012 while she was elected. Kirkpatrick ran for the Senate in 2016 -- against John McCain. McCain won by thirteen points. She would rather be working.

Political Note #42 Tom O’Halleran AZ 01

Tom O'Halloran is in his first term in Congress. He won that Congressional seat in 2016 replacing an incumbent congresswoman who ran against John McCain for Senate. He has focused on education and children's issues. Nor was he just a "feel good" guy. He led a successful effort to reorganize what he described as the dysfunctional Children's Protective Services. There was a cost to that leadership -- loss of his committee chairmanship and, perhaps, gaining a right wing primary opponent.
