A slippery slope? A nearby cliff?
A ludicrous proposal? Several Georgia Republicans proposed an “ethics board” for news. The ethics board would ensure that the press (the media?) has a basis for what it says. The board could require a news organizations to provide documentation for a questioned report.
Infringement on freedom of the press? Dangerous? A slippery slope?
What if we said “let’s talk.” Requests must be made directly by the Board? How about a non-partisan Board? Or a partisan, diverse Board which required unanimity? Limit the documentation to the specific issue questioned?
The electronic media, social media are filled with professionals and amateurs reporting the news. Lenspoliticalnotes.com is one of those. I could accept being asked for the basis of my statements. I could accept having an official agency asking Alex Jones for documentation. Or Breitbart.
And the social media. Who are these people making statements on Facebook or other media? If the source of a posting can’t be identified, then the carrier would be responsible. We might make a dent in fake news.
Let’s talk.
