The British may have a second chance to vote on Brexit. If Prime Minister Theresa May’s most recent plan fails, Parliament will need something to forestall a No Deal Brexit. A second vote becomes likely. What, however, would they vote on?
Just in case someone is listening, here is a suggestion. Learn from the State of Maine in the United States. Try the Instant Runoff System, otherwise called Ranked Voting. In Maine, a Congressional candidate who initially had the second most votes won the election after the second choices of the third and fourth place marginal candidates were distributed to the front runners.
The British could have four choices they could rank:
- A Hard Brexit – No Deal
- May’s Plan that the EU has agreed to.
- May’s Plan that the EU has agreed to with a commitment that the UK will maintain the Labour rights that the Labour Party seeks.
- No Brexit.
Everyone ranks his or her preference: 1-4. Redistribute the second choice for the fourth place choice. If there is no majority, redistribute the second choice for the third place choice. Majority wins.
