Political Note #42 Tom O’Halleran AZ 01

Tom O'Halloran is in his first term in Congress. He won that Congressional seat in 2016 replacing an incumbent congresswoman who ran against John McCain for Senate. He has focused on education and children's issues. Nor was he just a "feel good" guy. He led a successful effort to reorganize what he described as the dysfunctional Children's Protective Services. There was a cost to that leadership -- loss of his committee chairmanship and, perhaps, gaining a right wing primary opponent.

Political Note #41 Debbie Stabenow MI US Senate

Debbie Stabenow trained to be a social worker and it shows. She is a work horse Senator. She takes on unglamorous jobs. She was chair and is now the ranking member of the Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee. When she was chair and orchestrating the writing of the farm bill, she focused on supporting clean energy, local food systems, specialty crops that would reinvigorate the economies of small towns and rural communities as well as cutting-edge research and bio-based manufacturing. The food and farm legislation while she was chair had bipartisan support

Political Note #40 Jon Tester MT US Senate

Weighing in at 300 pounds or so, measuring well above six feet tall, it is pretty hard to imagine Jon Tester being bullied by Donald Trump shaking his hand (even if Trump tried to shake Jon Tester's left hand which has only two fingers). Grandson of a homesteader, Jon Tester took over the family farm in 1978. Even while farming he taught music in an elementary school and at Big Sandy High School to supplement his farm income. became a thoroughly successful politician. He moved quickly into leadership positions in the state Senate. He was minority leader and was even, briefly, the Senate President. Term limited, he changed districts and then, twenty years after taking over the family farm, ran for the US Senate. He beat the favored Democrat in a primary and beat the Republican incumbent who had been weakened by his own primary and by the Jack Abramoff scandal. In the Senate, Jon Tester, has been an advocate for transparency and ethics reform.

Political Note #39 Elizabeth Guzman VA HD 31

Virginia Guzman came to this country from Peru as a single mother looking for a better future for her daughter. She found exactly that. Her story is an American immigrant success story. With enough English to pass as bilingual, she moved on to private and public sector jobs requiring both languages. She earned a Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree and became Division Chief for the Department of Community Human Services in Alexandria. She became involved in politics, devoting herself to changing the public perception and legislators and law enforcement's perception of immigrants.

Political Note #38 Danica Roem VA HD 13

Eight or twelve years ago, Danica Roem would have been an impossible candidate -- not just because of the way Virginia's voting habits have changed, but even more profoundly because she is transgendered. She would be the first transgendered person elected who was open about her status. A former journalist, she won awards from the Virginia Press Association seven times for her writing in two small newspapers. She describes two former Prince William representatives, one a Democrat, the other a Republican as her ideal of how legislators should do their work: You didn't have to agree with them on every issue to see that they worked hard to build consensus, govern with a results-oriented approach and reach across the aisle to build a better Manassas.. .

Political Note #36 Kelly Convirs-Fowler VA HD 21

Kelly Convirs-Fowler's story begins in the Philippines. Both her grandfathers were Filipinos. Both served in the U.S. Navy. Both became US citizens by virtue of their service. Both were buried with honors as veterans, one of them in Arlington. She was a Virginia Beach public school third grade teacher for five years and now heads a group of real estate agents who specialize in military relocation. Political Note #35 Ralph Northam VA Governor

For a long time, Ralph Northam was not a Democrat. Son of a nurse and a Virginia judge, he was the kind of kid who is going places. A high school basketball player, the salutatorian of his graduating class, he was voted "most likely to succeed." For college, he went to VMI (the Virginia Military Institute). After college, he went to a local medical school and then joined the military, serving as an army physician from 1984 to 1992, getting further training as a pediatric neurologist. He voted for GW Bush in 2000 and 2004, ran for the Virginia State Senate as a Democrat in 2007, beating a Republican incumbent. He ran for Lt. Governor as a Democrat in 2013 (candidates for Governor and Lt. Governor run separately in Virginia) and won by 10 percentage points.

Political Note #31 Annie McLane Kuster NH CD 02

Annie Kuster was a leading New Hampshire attorney. Known for her work as an adoption attorney, she was also a lobbyist (or as she would call it, a public policy advocate) on behalf of surgical centers, pharmaceutical companies, and investment firms. Kuster's corporate work and connections led her toward the development of private-public partnerships as a Member of Congress -- the NH Medication Bridge program, a public-private partnership to provide free prescriptions to patients in need and the NH UNIQUE College Savings Plan to help families save money for college tax free. Ballotpedia describes Kuster as a moderate, left of center Democrat more likely to break with fellow Democrats than most of her colleagues.

Political Note #30 Brad Schneider IL CD 10

Brad Schneider http://www.schneiderforcongress.com/ is the 7th closest Democratic winner of the 2016 election. We know that he is a target and that he could lose. In fact, he has lost before -- in 2014 to the man he defeated in 2012 and 2016. Brad Schnieder has been an engineer and a business consultant. After graduating from Northwestern University with a degree in industrial engineering, he worked on a kibbutz in Israel. He returned to Northwestern to get a degree from the School of Management. In his non-political life, he became the managing principal of an insurance firm, director of strategic services for a larger firm, and then an independent consultant. A Democrat with business experience, he calls himself a progressive. He is pro-choice and supportive of same-sex marriage. He supported a $10.10 minimum wage and, as all Democrats have, the Affordable Care Act.
